We’ve been hearing a lot lately about a possible Apple-branded television. According to a new report from Smarthouse, Apple is currently looking into 55-inch OLED displays for the device, which could hit the shelves in late 2012.

Further speculation indicates that Apple has already been having discussions with LG – the company that makes most displays for Apple products – about the possibility of using a new 55-inch LG OLED panel for the Apple television, which will likely be a substantially revamped and rehashed implementation of the current Apple TV, all wrapped up in a pretty casing with a 55-inch screen.

To make matters more interesting, LG has reportedly already mentioned (last Friday) that they will be launching a limited-production OLED HDTV in late 2012. Further, analysts such as Gene Munster have been advocating for the Apple TV, which Munster expects to be released next year.

Personally, I hope that Apple does release an HDTV – the world of TVs, set-top boxes, and remotes has become both confusing and cumbersome to a great many consumers, and granted Apple’s legendary ability to smooth out and unify consumer experiences, I’d expect them to be able to re-invent the TV in a truly spectacular manner.
